The choice of surfboard size depends on a couple of factors. The first is ability and the second is time in the water. In general, the bigger the board is, the better it will be to catch waves on. Take a look at the tables below to get an idea about the minimum sizes that you should be looking at for your surfboard.
Here are some general guidelines to follow when choosing the right size surfboard:
- A novice surfer will need a larger board than a more experienced surfer.
- A less experienced surfer will need a bigger board than one who surfs regularly.
- A board that is too small will hold back a surfer’s improvement and probably result in frustration.
Shortboard Sizes
Please note that the sizes below should be used as a guide only. If you′re in doubt, get a board that is a little bigger than suggested below. Surfboard measurements are in imperial (feet and inches).

Longboard Sizes
Longboards are in a league of their own in terms of sizing and performance. These boards are stable platforms made for surfers of all abilities. The points highlighted in the "General Guidelines" above also apply to these types of boards. With a longboard, you will be sure to catch more waves and have a good time!
